Maria Sharapova appears on Japanese TV, visiting Harajuku Part 1 マリア・シャラポワ『炎の体育会TV』出演＆原宿へ行くの巻(その1)

15日夜、TBS系列で放送された『炎の体育会TV』に世界ランク2位のマリア・シャラポワが登場しました。

On Saturday evening, the world No. 2 Maria Sharapova appeared on a TV program “Honoo no Taiikukai (Burning Athletic Association) TV” by TBS network in Japan.

日本語が分からないシャラポワファンに内容が伝わればと思い、字幕やナレーションを元に英語の説明を添えましたが、番組ではシャラポワの話の途中で日本語の吹き替えがかぶっていて、彼女が話している声はほとんど聞こえませんでした。そのため、彼女の発言が忠実に訳されているかどうかは定かでない点をご了承下さい。

To let the non-Japanese speaking Sharapova fans get the idea of the content, I’ve added captions in English where I could hear Maria talk, and did some translations based on subtitles and voice-over. However Maria’s conversations were dubbed into Japanese and I could not hear the majority of her original voice. Please be noted that I cannot be sure if her conversations were precisely translated word to word or not.

Maria: Pretty. Kawaii (Cute).


Man: How was the ride?




Maria: It was wobbly.


Man: How tall are you?




Maria: 187.




Maria: Taller every year.


Man: Are you interested in Harajuku?




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): Very interested.


Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I knew of the name Harajuku…

Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I’m also interested in the Harajuku fashion…

Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): So I really wanted to come here.

Man: This is a typical outfit for Harajuku. What do you reckon?

Maria: It really suits you.



Maria: I think it’s very funky.

Maria: (I’m) Kawaii.

Maria: (You’re) Kawaii.

Maria: (He’s) No kawaii.




VO: Despite her busy schedule, she generously gave us an hour to entertain her.


Man: What’s your impression of Japan?



Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I have such great memories of Japan whenever I came here.




VO: When Maria was a little girl, she won a tournament in Japan.




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I’ve been coming back to Japan many times…




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): And I’m becoming more and more fond of Japan.




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I love the culture, food and people of Japan.


VO: She won her first title in Kusatsu as a professional when she was 15.




VO: So Japan is a special country for her.




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): Maybe in April, when I come to Japan next time…




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I want to see cherry blossoms.




Maria: I want to be able to visit Onsen.


Man: Are you OK with mixed bathing where men and women bathe together?




Maria: Together?




Maria: Mmm…




Maria: No.




Maria: Not for me.


Woman: I heard you like high-tech Japanese toilet.




Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): Yes, I like it because the seat is very warm and comfortable.





Maria (female voice-over in Japanese): I want to bring it back to my house in America.


Woman: And Maria loves fashion, too. There is a shop in Harajuku that gained a nationwide popularity in fashion.




Maria: So we will visit the house? Ok.

(In the 80's, teenagers who wore costumes from Boutique Takenoko danced on the sidewalk in Harajuku on Sundays.)

Man: Do you dance at all?




Maria: Yes, when I take a shower.


Man: I don’t suppose you have that footage…
